VIRTUAL TASTING WITH

REVANA~CORAZON DEL SOL~ALEXANA

In 1997, while visiting the Napa Valley, Dr. Madaiah Revana discovered a small parcel of prime vineyard land in St. Helena and immediately sensed the property’s potential as the Revana Estate vineyard. This northern part of Napa is a narrow stretch of the valley framed by the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains that benefits from more moderate temperatures, a combination of warm days and cool nights, without the foggy mornings found in the lower valley or the extreme heat of Calistoga to the north. The area was already known for producing some of the world’s most sought after Cabernet Sauvignon and the property’s gravelly soils, sloped pitch, and excellent exposures seemed perfect for growing grapes. Studies of the soil composition confirmed that it was an ideal location for premium Bordeaux varieties.

Then in the spring of 2005, Dr. Revana began a search for the ideal region with the goal of producing Pinot Noirs that could rival those from Burgundy. His search ended in Oregon’s Willamette Valley with an 80-acre property located in the Dundee Hills AVA known for its distinct geography and diverse micro-climates. Alexana Winery is named after Dr. Revana’s daughter, Alexandra, and the wines are a reflection of Oregon’s cool grape-growing climate and have become known for their elegance, balance and character.

In 2008 Dr. Revana, enthralled by the terroir of the Uco Valley,  went to Argentina determined to find his next great estate here on the incredible alluvial soils at the base of the Andes Mountains. He calls this 17-acre site Corazon del Sol (meaning heart of the sun in Spanish), a nice play on words as a tribute to his son Arun (which in Sanskrit, one of its meanings is sun) as well as a nod to the vineyards’ 3,000-foot elevation and increased exposure to the sun with over 300 days of sunshine on average each year. Made up of rock and sand which has eroded from the Andes Mountains over millennia, these soils are extremely deep and well-drained, resulting in wines of great complexity, power and finesse.

Dr. Mediah Revana is a practicing heart surgeon in Houston, Texas. As a cardiologist, he understands the specialist’s need for a balance of autonomy and collaboration. In bringing vineyard manager Jim Barbour (Screaming Eagle, Grace Family, Hundred Acre, Cakebread, D.R. Stephens, etc.) and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown (Schrader Cellars, Turley Wine Cellars, Winemaker of the Year with over 25 100-point wine scores, etc.) to Revana Family Vineyard and supporting them in their work he is acting in the classic tradition of the managing vintner. His role is to provide the guiding philosophy of quality above all else. 

Tasting Selections:

2016 Revana “Terroir Series” Cabernet Sauvignon 

Arising from carefully selected vineyard sites in St Helena, Oak Knoll and Calistoga, the 2016 is packed with concentrated blackberry, supple cherries, graphite and a touch of sweet vanilla. Housed for 14 months in French oak barrels and a full year in the bottle before release, this Cabernet will thrill you from the first sip to last.

2014 Corazon del Sol, Revana Vineyard, “Luminoso” 

Argentina’s first GSM ever produced from our 3-acre parcel of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre planted along the ancient river bed (Arroyo Grande) on the Western edge of Uco Valley at 3,450’ in elevation in the sub-zone of Los Chacayes. On the nose pomegranate, strawberry, white pepper and violets. A beautiful palate of fresh red fruit with lively acidity and a spicy dark fruit core. Complex tannins add layers of elegant texture. 46% Mourvèdre | 39 % Grenache | 15% Syrah

2018 Alexana, Revana Vineyard, Estate Riesling 

This parcel’s cool microclimate consistently produces a dry-style of Riesling that provides bright & vibrant acidity making it versatile for pairing with a wide variety of foods.  On the nose, notes of honeysuckle, lemon zest and green apple. On the palate, flavors of jasmine, ginger and grapefruit.
