Once & Future | Green & Red | Zinfandel | 2019
Napa Valley, California
A deeply colored wine with aromas of plums, cherries, and black pepper. A touch of French oak gives notes of toast and vanilla that are beautifully balanced with perfumed aromas of violets. Full and rich body with refreshing acidity and fine supportive tannins.

About the Wines
Walter Scott
For husband and wife team of Erica Landon and Ken Pahlow, 2008 marked the launch of their dream in Oregon’s Willamette Valley: the formation of Walter Scott Wines. Ken had dreams of starting his own label but had not truly achieved his goal until Erica inspired him to take the leap. In the Spring of that year, the two partners emptied their meager retirement accounts and used the funds to design their label and get started.
The name Walter Scott honors two men who meant the world to Ken. Walter, Ken’s grandfather, was a flight engineer for Trans World Airlines. Walter’s always strived to make his dreams become reality. He was dynamic and adventurous—he did everything from building homes to riding motorcycles to flying planes. His influence taught Ken that there are no limits to what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it. Scott was Ken’s nephew. Although his time was short, Scott was fearless. Much like his great-grandfather, he never shied away from anything. Scott’s departure taught Ken that life is very short and you must act on your ambitions because you never know when your chance will pass.
Walter Scott Wines’ first vintage, La Combe Verte Pinot Noir, was produced in 2009 at Patricia Green Cellars where Ken traded harvest labor for winemaking space. For the following two vintages, Ken changed location to Evening Land where he began working alongside Dominique Lafon. In 2011, Walter Scott began making Chardonnay, which contributed significantly to both their growing production and group of loyal followers.
Once & Future
Joel Peterson is known affectionately in the wine world as ‘The Godfather of Zin’. He’s the man who gave Zinfandel its iconic status in the US, having co-founded Ravenswood Winery in Sonoma back in 1976. It was from here that the expression ‘no wimpy wines’ was born and Peterson became the poster man for rich, concentrated, figgy Zinfandel wines that packed a huge, alcoholic, tooth-staining punch.
Fast forward to now, however, and Peterson’s focus has shifted. He sold Ravenswood to Constellation in 2018 and has gone back to his roots, literally, to embark on a much smaller project where he makes tiny quantities of fine wine from vines that are often over 100 years old. Gone are the jammy, powerhouse wines made in huge quantities. Say hello to concentrated, yet fresh, lean, and perfumed wines where often, only a couple of hundred cases of each are made. This new project is called Once & Future.
Joel looks for forgotten vineyards with old vines with grapes that should have had more of a legacy than the ‘blight’, as he calls it, of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. From the sandy soils of Oakley Vineyard where 117-year-old Mataro (Mourvedre) vines stand on their own roots to 129-year-old Zinfandel vines in the famous Tuscan Red Hills Series soils, these Once & Future wines, while a new project for Joel, showcase a real snapshot of Californian viticultural history.
