About Grgich Hills Estate Winery

Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first earned worldwide recognition when the Chateau Montelena 1973 Chardonnay that he crafted won the 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France and then revolutionizing the wine world. Mike then partnered with Austin Hills of the Hills Bros. Coffee family to open their family-owned-and-operated winery on July 4, 1977.

Grgich Hills Estate is deeply rooted in family. The winery was founded by two families, Grgich and Hills,  joined together in the pursuit of creating the best wines in the world. Today, Mike’s daughter, Violet Grgich, is President, and Ivo Jeramaz, Mike’s nephew, is Winemaker/VP of Vineyards & Production.

Their estate Cabernet is built for aging, typically peaking at around 10 years and continuing to develop for another 20 to 30 years. “We always save between 10 -15% of our Cabernet for our library collection,” explains Violet Grgich, Winery President. “It is one of the great benefits of being family owned and operated.”

Winemaker Ivo Jeramaz

Winemaker Ivo Jeramaz joined his uncle at Grgich Hills Estate in 1986 and has since become the winery’s winemaker and VP of vineyards and production. Ivo has always had a passion for organic and regenerative farming practices. He has committed to farming each of our five estate vineyards organically without the assistance of pesticides or herbicides.

“At Grgich Hills, we grow grapes like my grandfather did, farming without chemicals and pesticides. Mike taught me early in my career that you need great grapes to make great wine. Over the years, I’ve focused on working with the land. Through our natural farming, it’s been very rewarding to see the soil alive with healthier plants than under conventional farming. It allows the wines to be more authentic—more distinctive.” —Ivo Jeramaz

The health of the vineyards has and always will be a top priority for Grgich Hills Estate. With each glass of their wine, they hope that you can have the confidence that they have grown the best grapes possible in healthy, organically farmed vineyards.
