Wines of the Iberian Peninsula In-Person Tasting

The vertigo-inducing slopes of Portugal’s Douro Valley and the orange-tinted soils of Spain’s expansive vineyards have long inspired poets, writers, and vintners. Despite the high-end wine industry’s attentiveness to France and Italy, Spain actually has more land devoted to vineyards than any other country in Europe!

The sun-kissed Mediterranean climate of Spain & Portugal gives many of the wines a juicy, fruit-forward flavor profile, while also containing the significant savory flavors that European wines are famous for. It is also quite mountainous, as well as being climatically and geographically dynamic, offering many different terroirs.

Because the peninsula’s wine culture developed in relative isolation, many grape varieties do not grow anywhere else in the world. If you don’t recognize the grape variety on a Spanish or Portuguese wine label, it’s a good thing! There are over 250 indigenous varieties and a few imports (including Alicante Bouschet) that have adapted well to the landscape (i.e., they are delicious). The Iberian Peninsula remains a mecca for lovers of rich, full-bodied wines with great cellaring potential. To many wine experts, it is the last frontier of wine in Western Europe; there is still so much to be tasted and explored!

“Wines from Portugal and Spain don’t have a long history of collecting, but they are some of the most pleasurable wines for cellaring.” ~Christopher Munro, Head of Fine Wine for Christie’s Auction House
