July 2022 Grand Crew Wine Selections

We are excited to announce our Grand Crew wine selections for July 2022! Four beautiful bottles from different areas and noteworthy producers in South Africa, and we can’t wait for you to try them!

About South African Wines

While South Africa is considered a ‘New World’ wine region, vines were originally planted here in 1655 in Cape Town. The sweet dessert wines of Constantia were highly sought-after by the European aristocracy during this time period.

The South African wine industry began seeing a renaissance after setbacks due to phylloxera in the late 1800s. While the region’s climate can be quite hot, cool ocean breezes and areas of high elevation make grape-growing not only possible but very successful. The wines typically have characteristics of ripe, silky fruit, restrained elegance, and bright acidity.

Today, South Africa is the ninth-largest wine-producing market globally. The new generation of winemakers in South Africa, many of whom have traveled and worked all over the world, are innovating and improving both in the vineyards and in the cellars. It is a very exciting time for South African wines, which have improved dramatically in recent decades.

Host a wine-pairing dinner with this month’s selections, or get some friends together for a blind tasting—either way, enjoy!

Included This Month:

Beaumont | Chenin Blanc | 2021
Bot River, Western Cape, South Africa
Punchy and full of flavor! Green melon, apple, and delicate apricot blossom aromas on the nose. The palate has fresh green apple and pineapple flavors with a hint of wood spice. Crisp, yet well balanced, acidity keeps the wine fresh with great length.

DeWetshof | Limestone Hill | Chardonnay | 2021
Robertson, Breede River Valley, Western Cape, South Africa
Heavy clay soils rich in limestone allow this Chardonnay to emit optimum varietal expression in a cloak of rich complexity. An un-wooded wine, Limestone Hill has notes of grapefruit and nuts, with the complexity balanced by a nuanced elegance ending with a delicate ripeness.

Badenhorst ‘Secateaurs’ | Red Blend | 2019
Cinsault | Shiraz | Grenache | Tinta Barocca | Mourvedre
Swartland, Western Cape, South Africa
The aromas are perfumed, peppery, and spicy, and exhibit ripe red fruit notes. As always, the palate texture of this wine is supple and smooth but with enough grip and freshness to finish dry and refreshing.

Vilafonté | Seriously Old Dirt | 2019
Cabernet Sauvignon | Malbec | Merlot | Cabernet Franc
Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa
layers of fresh fruit on the nose; plum, black cherry, and blackberry along with warm notes of baking spice and vanilla pod. Subtle licorice and seductive tobacco and hazelnut add a luxurious dimension. Flavors of ripe black cherry develop into lovely mineral notes, along with a lingering finish. Sumptuous and supple, with a line of acidity, giving elegance and balance.

Stop by and try a splash of each wine and order additional bottles of your favorites.
We are excited to see you!
