History of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars was founded in 1970 with the purchase of a 40-acre property in the now famed Stag’s Leap District AVA in Napa Valley. The winery brought international recognition to California winemaking and the Napa Valley region when their 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon won the 1976 Paris Tasting, also known as the “Judgment of Paris.”

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ three estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons – CASK 23, S.L.V., and Fay—are among the most highly regarded and collected Cabernet Sauvignons worldwide. The Cabernet wines are fashioned to express richness balanced by elegant restraint, an approach often described as “an iron fist in a velvet glove.”

About Luis Contreras

Luis Contreras, who has worked for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars for 21 years, was named Assistant Winemaker in June 2017. He began his career as a temporary bottling worker in 1996 and worked his way up the ranks by spending two years in bottling, eight years as a cellar worker, and was promoted to Cellar Master in 2006.

As Assistant Winemaker, Luis works closely with Winemaker Marcus Notaro and Vineyard Director Kirk Grace on crafting the highest quality Napa Valley wines possible. Luis visits the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars vineyards during different growing stages to evaluate performance and he participates in wine tastings with Winemaker Marcus Notaro to see the progress of every lot during the aging process. In addition, Luis continues to oversee all cellar and bottling operations as he has for more than a decade in his role as Cellar Master.

Due to an increase in no-shows and last-minute cancellations, we will be implementing a $25/person fee for cancellations under 24 hours.
